ABOUT THERAPEUTIC ANIMISM
Therapeutic animism is a holistic approach to wellness that blends the wisdom of animism with the regulated professionalism of social work counseling, celebrating the deep connection and respect for all life forms and natural phenomena. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being, weaving together nature-based therapy, eco-spiritual practices, and symbolic work.
By decolonizing mental health and embracing indigenous knowledge systems, therapeutic animism promotes re-wilding and rekindles our innate bond with the natural world. There is also an invitation to explore non-ordinary realms and spirituality, fostering a sense of balance and harmony within oneself and with the universe.

SOCIAL WORK
Social work is a profession and practice dedicated to enhancing the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. It focuses on empowering people to overcome challenges, navigate life transitions, and improve their quality of life by addressing social, emotional, and systemic barriers. Social work is guided by core values such as social justice, dignity, equity, and the importance of human relationships.
Social workers support individuals in navigating complex life experiences, such as mental health challenges, family dynamics, trauma, poverty, discrimination, or significant life changes. They work in various settings, including schools, hospitals, community organizations, government agencies, and private practices.
Social Work not only considers the individual but also examines how their challenges are intertwined with the broader social systems they navigate.
The uniqueness of social work practice lies in the blend of particular values, knowledge, and skills, including the use of relationship as the basis of all interventions and respect for the client’s choice and involvement.
A social worker’s approach is holistic—they consider the interplay of personal circumstances, societal influences, and systemic structures in shaping a person’s experience.
This perspective includes:
-
Holistic Understanding: Addresses the interplay between personal, relational, and systemic factors that influence well-being.
-
Trauma-Informed Care: Creates a safe, non-judgmental space for exploring experiences and emotions with sensitivity and support.
-
Empowerment and Advocacy: Supports personal growth while challenging societal barriers and promoting access to resources.
Social work views individuals not as isolated entities but as part of a larger social and ecological system. It recognizes that personal struggles often stem from societal structures, systemic oppression, or life circumstances beyond an individual’s control. This understanding shapes the field's commitment to both empowering individuals and advocating for systemic change.
ANIMISM
Animism is an ancient worldview and spiritual philosophy that sees all of life as interconnected and imbued with vitality and spirit. Rooted in many indigenous and traditional cultures worldwide, animism honors the idea that everything—humans, animals, plants, rocks, rivers, even the wind—possesses its own essence or spirit. It invites us to recognize the sacredness and interrelationship of all beings, fostering a deep sense of respect, connection, and reciprocity with the world around us.
While animism is often associated with traditional practices, its principles remain profoundly relevant today. In a modern context, animism can be understood as a way of reconnecting with ourselves and the world by cultivating mindfulness, gratitude, and an awareness of our interconnectedness. It invites us to move away from a mindset of domination or separation and instead embrace harmony and mutual care with the natural world.
In my practice, animism serves as a foundation for healing and renewal. By recognizing the living essence within and around us, we tap into a sense of belonging that transcends isolation and disconnection. Animism helps us see our emotions, experiences, and personal narratives as part of a larger, dynamic ecosystem.
This perspective allows for:
-
Reconnection: Restoring a sense of wholeness by acknowledging our relationship to the earth, others, and ourselves.
-
Healing as a Natural Process: Viewing emotional and spiritual growth as an organic unfolding rather than fixing something “broken.”
-
Inner Wisdom: Honoring the innate intelligence and vitality within you and the world, guiding your journey toward balance and alignmen
Embracing animism is not about adopting a specific belief system; it’s about awakening to the aliveness in yourself and your surroundings. It’s an invitation to listen more deeply, feel more fully, and act with greater respect for the intricate web of life to which we all belong. Through this lens, healing becomes an act of reconnection—restoring harmony within and with the world around you.
