I never used to see the link between money and my spiritual wellness. For a long time, I thought money was just a material necessity. But over the past year, I’ve come to understand that how I handle money is closely tied to my emotional and spiritual state.
My relationship with money is becoming more loving. I see that money has the potential to create amazing experiences or cause me stress and suffering if I’m not mindful of where I’m investing it.
When I talk to people about investing in themselves financially, sometimes they say they can’t afford it. Yet, they’ll spend lots of money on clothes, alcohol, gambling, drugs, junk food, tattoos, fancy nails, eyelashes, monthly hair treatments, and other things to make their external world look better.
I’ve done all these things. I’ve overvalued my external world at times. These things bring temporary joy. I love beauty and having fun, and I’m not saying we should stop enjoying those things. But when I feel like shit, all the external stuff in the world won’t mend that.
Think about it—how often do you buy something as a temporary fix when you’re feeling down? Is that expensive coffee or shopping spree really filling a deeper need, or is it just a distraction from discomfort?
So, when people say they can’t afford it, what they may really be expressing is:
“I’m not ready to make a change.”
“I’m scared of change.”
“I don’t believe I deserve to feel better.”
“I don’t believe I can feel better, and this is the only way I know how to cope.”
“I put more value on my external world than on my internal world.”
If this resonates, it’s okay. The first step is simply acknowledging it.
There are so many ways to offer yourself love that don’t cost money, and some that do. Meditation, dancing, creativity, quality time with loved ones, writing, seeing a naturopath, eating healthy, moving your body, watching meaningful media, therapy, energy healing, massage, authentic conversations, reading soul-filling stories—these are long-term investments in your wellness.
Let’s stop looking for a quick fix to feel better when these solutions are only making us feel more sick, cluttered, and unwell.
Let’s stop blaming money for our choices. Let’s have conviction and enjoy where we put that money—even if it’s to a short-term joy! Enjoy the heck out of it!
Take a moment to reflect on where you’re investing your money and time. Is there space to shift your investments toward your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being? Even small changes can lead to powerful transformations.

Money, like all energy in the universe, is a living force that flows through and connects all things. It is not separate from the natural world, but a tool that can support the thriving of both our inner and outer worlds. In an animist worldview, everything—be it the trees, the rivers, the stars, or the soil beneath our feet—is imbued with life and energy. Money, too, is part of this greater web of interconnectedness. When we recognize money as a form of energy, we begin to see that it is not something to hoard or fear, but rather a current that can be used to nourish, heal, and create balance.
Just as the earth provides us with sustenance, abundance, and beauty, so too can we cultivate a relationship with money that reflects balance, respect, and reciprocity. In the same way we honour the cycles of nature—planting seeds, nurturing growth, and harvesting—we can honour the flow of money by investing in ourselves, in the health of the earth, and in the well-being of our communities. By consciously choosing how and where we place our resources, we are not only nourishing our own lives but contributing to the flourishing of the whole world.
When we approach money from an animist perspective, we acknowledge that abundance is not just about material wealth, but about the energy we exchange with others, the gratitude we give to the earth, and the joy we share in community. In doing so, we align ourselves with the flow of life, inviting more prosperity and growth—both in our material world and in our spiritual journey. Just as we care for the plants and animals, we must care for our financial energy, using it wisely to create harmony, healing, and connection in all areas of our lives.
